Operation Help-A-Hero

June 1- June 30 for drop off

Tuesday, June 14 for Open Sew

Currently, there are several hundred homeless veterans in Chicago.  When a veteran leaves a shelter or transitional housing and moves to a permanent residence, they often do not have the basic items needed to set up a home.  While we may take these things for granted, the men and women who have bravely fought to defend our freedom do not.

The City of Chicago has launched Operation Help-A-Hero. For the month of June, the City will be taking in donations of much needed household items for military veterans and their families. The Quilter’s Trunk will be participating in Operation Help-A-Hero by taking in donations of your handmade pillowcases and quilts. Here’s how you can help:

  • Drop off pillowcases and quilts anytime between now and June 30. Every donation of a pillowcase will also count towards our 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge.
  • On Flag Day, Tuesday June 14th, we will open our classroom and you can come sew.  Choose between the morning or afternoon session.
  • Our classroom machines will be available for you to use so leave yours at home.
  • TQT will have a selection of fabrics priced at 30% off regular price if you use them in your project.
  • TQT will have a free pillowcase pattern for you to use.
  • We will also provide music, coffee, tea and chocolate!

Let’s show these veterans and their families how much we appreciate them!

Foot Notes: Sewing Machine Accessory Hands-On Class

Do you use your standard presser foot or ¼” quilt piecing foot for every sewing task? Does getting crazy mean breaking out your zipper foot? You might already have a dozen or more accessory feet, and there are many others you could add to your collection. Why do you need specialty feet anyway? Well, you wouldn’t stir your coffee with a ladle or serve spaghetti with an ice cream scoop because they are not the right tool for the job. The right presser foot can make all the difference. They will make you better at sewing and give your projects a more professional look. Plus, some feet are just plain fun to use!

Join Baby Lock Educator Sue Kostroski as she shows you what you can do with accessory feet. This is a hands-on class where you will stitch out samples using various feet and accessories. Your samples will be attached to pages and made into a handy reference book for use again and again! Two sessions to choose from.

A Taste of Summer Carnival Workshop
Featuring Special Guest Instructor Mickey Depre

Local quilt author/instructor extraordinaire Mickey Depre will be hosting a colorful and adventurous day filled with making the primary block of the Summer Carnival quilt featured in her latest book, “Half-Scrap Quilts.” Strips of fabric 1.5” and 2.5” wide are sewn, cut, and sewn again to make this fun block which is a twist on a traditional Sisters Choice block.  This block fills the center of the quilt with a confetti–like appearance.

While the Summer Carnival quilt as shown is truly scrappy in all the blocks, it can be done with one or more focus fabrics. There are so many variables, i.e., two color palette, florals, print themes, or just dig into your scrap bin and have fun playing with different fabric combos. To help you choose fabric for your quilt, Mickey will be on hand during our Thursday Night Sew-In on Thursday, June 23.

Workshop fee includes the use of a Baby Lock sewing machine. Lunch and snacks are provided. Stop by the store for supply list and pre-work requirements. You will need to purchase the book “Half-Scrap Quilts” from The Quilter’s Trunk if you do not already own it.

TQT Welcomes Amy Walsh of Blue Underground Studios!

The Quilter's Trunk is excited to host Amy Walsh of Blue Underground Studios a fun and educational workshop. Blue Underground Studios is known for its fresh and innovative patterns. In addition, Amy is a fabric designer. Her most recent line, Color Matters, features beautiful, bold colors with large graphic designs. It combines colors in a unique way that really pops!

Color Workshop
Amy is here to de-mystify the color wheel and give you the confidence to play with color and expand your horizons when putting projects together.  What you learn can be applied not only to quilts, but to any project that involves color choice - painting your kitchen, selecting carpet for your den, picking shoes to match an outfit, you name it!
In this hands-on workshop, Amy will take students from exploring the color wheel to perfecting their own color palette and understanding how to make their own harmonious choices. The workshop consists of several lessons, with thought-provoking and fun activities. The workshop is a study in color, and does not involve any sewing. Lunch will be provided.
