Charity Sewing Event
Dress a Girl Around the World

Join Gina Ordonez and Ruth Bernhardt-Kuehl as we make cute dresses from men’s shirts.  These dresses will be sent to "Dress a Girl around the World", a program of Hope 4 Women International (, where they will be distributed to girls in need. Using large-sized men’s cotton shirts, we’ll design, cut, sew, and trim a dress.  No matter how much sewing experience you have, there will be something for you to do from tracing and cutting out the pattern, to construction, ironing, making ruffles and buttonholes.

Free shirt kits will be available for you to use.  Alternatively, you may bring:

    • The more colorful the better
    • Hawaiian shirts are really fun
    • No all white dress shirts, please
  • At least ½ yard coordinating fabric
  • Fabric will be available for purchase at a 10% discount

We ask that you also bring basic sewing items – colorful thread, scissors, rotary cutter and small ruler.  You will use our classroom sewing machines, so leave yours at home! There is no cost for this workshop, but you may wish to donate a few dollars at the class so Hope 4 Women International can purchase some girls’ underclothes to be sent with the dresses.

Quilts and Human Rights Exhibit at the Pick Museum

Bus Trip

By popular demand, TQT has chartered a bus to see upcoming Quilts and Human Right Exhibit at the Pick Museum of Anthropology at Northern Illinois University. Laura McDowell Hopper, curator at the Pick Museum shared a sneak peek with us last month. It was fabulous, and we can't wait to see the full exhibit in person. In addition to the public exhibit, participants will be treated to a behind the scenes tour of their textile storage area.

The bus will depart from TQT at 9am. The first stop will be Egg Haven Cafe where participants can get brunch/lunch. Lunch is not included in the fee for the bus trip, so be sure to plan ahead. See the menu here:

After lunch, the bus will take us to the Pick Museum for the tours. Participants will have time to explore the museum on their own after the tour. The bus will then return to TQT by 6pm.
